  • Plan and coverage

    1. Why do I need to buy car insurance?

      This is governed by the Motor Vehicles (Third-Party Risks and Compensation) Act 1960, under which motorists are required to have an insurance policy to cover their liabilities against third party bodily injury and/or property damage.

    2. I read about damage to vehicles by falling trees, flooding and fires by arsonists. Can I make a claim for such damages?

      Yes, you can make a claim for damages to your vehicle caused by falling trees, flooding and fires by arsonists.

    3. What is ‘excess’?

      Excess is the first amount of the claim that you must pay. For example, if the excess is S$300 and the total repair cost is S$2,000, you will have to pay S$300. The insurer will bear the remaining cost of S$1,700.

    4. Who will be covered for accidental death or permanent disability?

      We will pay compensation for bodily injury sustained by you (the Insured), Authorised Driver and/or Passenger(s) as a result of a car accident. Compensation payable will be up to the benefit limits stated in the policy.

    5. Who will be covered for medical expenses?

      We will provide reimbursement of up to S$1,000 to each injured person for reasonable medical expenses incurred in connection with bodily injury sustained by you (the Insured), Authorised Driver and/or Passenger(s) as a result of a car accident.

    6. Why is windscreen damage listed separately in the policy? Do I have to reinstate my windscreen cover after a claim? Will my No Claims Discount (NCD) be affected?

      Windscreen damage has a separate excess from other damages to your car. The windscreen benefit covers the cost of reinstating any glass in the car windscreen and is subject to an excess of S$100 for each claim. Our policy offers unlimited reinstatements of windscreen cover.

    7. Does the policy include cover for Certificate of Entitlement (COE)?

      Yes, it does.

    8. In the policy document, the coverage limit for my vehicle is stated as ‘market value’. What does this mean?

      This means that we will cover up to the assessed value of your vehicle as at the time of the accident. We will derive this value by comparing retail prices for vehicles of the same make, model, age and condition.

    9. Am I covered outside of Singapore?

      You are covered when you drive in Singapore, West Malaysia and parts of Thailand that are within 80.5km of the border between Thailand and West Malaysia.

    10. Am I covered if I use my vehicle for hire and reward purposes (e.g. GrabCar)?

      No, you will not be covered if you use your vehicle for hire and reward purposes.

    11. Who can I call if I get into a car accident?

      You can call our 24-hour emergency assistance hotline at +65 6535 0511.

  • Named drivers

    1. Can I include a named driver in my policy?

      Yes, you can include up to 3 named drivers. If you need to change the details of the named driver(s), please email GEMotor@greateasterngeneral.com to let us know.

    2. What is the additional Excess imposed on an Unnamed Driver who gets into an accident while using my vehicle?

      If an Unnamed Driver gets into an accident while using your vehicle and you make a claim, an additional Excess1 will apply on top of the standard excess. Here are the details:

      Unnamed Driver2 Additional Excess1
      Aged below 26 or above 69 S$2,500
      Aged between 26 and 69 with less than 3 years of driving experience S$2,500
      Aged between 26 and 69 with 3 or more years of driving experience S$500

      1 Excess is the amount that the policyholder is required to contribute before he/she can make a claim.
      2 An Unnamed Driver is someone who has not been named under a car insurance policy.

    3. If I include a named driver in my policy, will my overall premium increase?

      The policy premium is calculated based on the profiles of the primary driver and any named drivers. Depending on the risk profiles of the drivers, the premium may remain, increase or decrease.

      It is important to disclose relevant information in your application so that the risks can be assessed accurately.

  • No Claim Discount (NCD)

    1. What is NCD? How will it affect my premium?

      A No Claim Discount (NCD) is an entitlement given to you if no claim has been made under your policy for a year or more with the existing insurer. It reduces the premium you have to pay for the following year. NCD is recognised by all insurers across the industry.

      The NCD is a way of rewarding you for being a careful driver. The following table shows how it is determined by most insurers across the industry.

      Number of accident-free years NCD awarded to private car
      One year 10%
      Two consecutive years 20%
      Three consecutive years 30%
      Four consecutive years 40%
      Five or more consecutive years 50%
    2. Is the NCD tied to me or my vehicle?

      The NCD is tied to you, not the vehicle. If you sell your existing vehicle and buy a new one, your existing NCD can be used when you buy insurance for the new vehicle. However, you cannot apply an existing NCD to multiple vehicles.

    3. How is NCD applied?

      The NCD is tied to you, the policyholder, not the vehicle. It can only be applied to one vehicle at a time. If you own more than one vehicle, you will need to decide which vehicle to apply your NCD to.

      Here are some possible scenarios:

      • If you sell your existing vehicle and buy a new one, you can transfer the existing NCD to the new vehicle.
      • If you buy a new vehicle and keep your existing one, you can choose to transfer the existing NCD to the new vehicle. The NCD applicable to your existing vehicle will then become 0% again (you will be able to increase it over the years so long as you continue to not make claims).
      • Alternatively, you can choose to not transfer your existing NCD to the newly-purchased vehicle. You will be able to increase the NCD applicable to the new vehicle over time by remaining accident-free.
    4. Can I insure against the loss of my NCD?

      As long as you have an NCD of 40% or higher, you can choose to add on the NCD Protector benefit. This is an optional benefit that requires additional premium to be paid.

      With the NCD Protector, your NCD will be protected if you make a claim during the insurance period. Your NCD will be affected if you make more than one claim during the insurance period. Here are the details:

      Number of claims made during insurance period NCD you will be entitled to upon policy renewal
      1 50%
      2 20%
      3 or More 0%

      The NCD Protector benefit can be transferred between insurers.

    5. What if I declare an incorrect NCD?

      We will check with your previous insurer and adjust the NCD accordingly:

      • If your actual NCD is higher than declared: We will return you the difference in premium.
      • If your actual NCD is lower than declared: You will need to pay us the difference in premium.
    6. What is the penalty if I fail to report an accident to my insurer?

      We may refuse to accept the liability for the accident in view of a breach in policy conditions. Your NCD will be further reduced by 10%, in addition to any reduction in NCD resulting from the claim made under your car insurance policy.

    7. How long will my NCD remain valid after I stop owning a car?

      Your NCD will remain valid for 24 months from the end date of the policy you last held.

    8. I am the policyholder and primary driver for my car insurance policy. Can I transfer my NCD to one of the named drivers under my policy so that he/she can enjoy a lower premium?

      You will not be able to transfer your NCD to a person other than your spouse (provided that your spouse is buying a new car insurance policy from Great Eastern). This transfer would be one-time only and non-reversible. After the transfer, the NCD applicable to your existing car insurance policy will become 0%.

    9. I am the registered owner of the car but do not have a driving license. The primary driver listed under my policy wishes to buy a car under his/her name. Can I transfer the NCD to him/her?

      You will not be able to transfer your NCD to a person other than your spouse (provided that your spouse is buying a new car insurance policy from Great Eastern).

    10. Can I transfer my NCD from a motorcycle/commercial vehicle to my private car?

      No, NCD levels for motorcycles/commercial vehicles are different from private cars’.

    11. If my car insurance policy is in force, can I withdraw my NCD?

      Yes, you can – provided that no claims have been made under your car insurance policy. You will also need to top up the difference in premium resulting from the withdrawal of your NCD.

      Great Eastern General Insurance Limited,
      1 Pickering Street, #01-01 Great Eastern Centre, Singapore 048659

    5. If I cancel my policy, how will my premium refund be calculated?

      The premium refund will be calculated as follows:

      [80% of premium] x unexpired period of insurance (in days) / original period of insurance* (in days)

      No refund will be payable if:

      • The premium refund is less than S$25; or
      • A claim arose under the policy prior to its cancellation.

      You will need to return the certificate(s) of insurance to us on or before the date of cancellation and pay the premium due.

      * The original period of insurance will be deemed to include any extension of period in the policy.

  • Claims

    1. My vehicle was involved in an accident. However, there was no damage to it/I do not wish to make a claim. Do I still have to lodge a report with the General Insurance Association Of Singapore (GIA) or at Great Eastern’s Authorised Reporting Centres?

      Under the Motor Claims Framework (MCF), you should lodge a GIA report at any of our Authorised Accident Reporting Centres if you get into an accident, regardless of severity. You must do so within 24 hours or by the next working day. If no claim is submitted against your policy, the report will not affect your policy/NCD. The accident report is important as it will provide us with the information necessary to handle any claims made against your policy arising from the accident.

      For more information about the MCF, please visit GIA’s website.

    2. What should I do if I get into a car accident?

      Please take these steps:

      1. Exchange particulars (i.e. name; driving licence, NRIC/passport and contact numbers) with the other driver(s) involved in the accident. Take note of the vehicle numbers.
      2. Take photos of the accident scene and the damage caused to the vehicles involved.
      3. Call our 24-hour towing helpline at +65 6535 0511 for towing service if needed.
      4. If a towing service is not needed, send your damage vehicle to any workshop of your choice (including the dealer’s workshop).
      5. Make a police report as soon as possible or within 2 hours of the accident if the accident involves:
        • Fatality;
        • Damage to government property;
        • Foreign-registered vehicles;
        • Government-registered vehicles;
        • Pedestrians or cyclists;
        • Hit-and-run;
        • Vandalism or theft of your car; or
        • Injuries.
      6. If you have video recordings of the accident, keep them. They should be submitted alongside the accident report and claim.
      7. File a report at an Authorised Accident Reporting Centre within 24 hours or by the next working day, even if you do not intend to make a claim.
      8. If you receive any Writ of Summon or Letter of Demand from Third Party against you due to the accident, do not reply to it. Forward it to Great Eastern immediately.

      Please note that filing a report at an Authorised Accident Reporting Centre – within 24 hours or by the next working day – is mandatory under the Motor Claims Framework. Failure to do so would allow the insurer to apply a late reporting penalty against your NCD, and repudiate liability indemnifying you for the repair to your damaged vehicle and your liability towards damage caused to third party property and/or injury.

      Under the Motor Claims Framework endorsed by the General Insurance Association of Singapore, you are required to file an accident report regardless of whether you intend to make a claim.

    3. What is the time frame for me to report the accident?

      Under the Motor Claims Framework, all motor accidents must be reported to your insurer within 24 hours or by the next working day. You should do so even if the accident was trivial or if there is no visible damage, or if you do not intend to make a claim.

    4. Do I need to pay any reporting fees?

      No, there are no reporting fees.

    5. Will I be informed of the status of any third party claims against me?

      Yes. We will inform you once we receive any letter of demand from a third party.
