FAQS
Common questions
What are the differences between leasing and owning your solar energy system?

The key difference is the ownership is the solar energy system.

Leasing: Little or no upfront and maintenance costs, certainty of electricity costs. You will be entering into a power purchase agreement (PPA) with a solar partner.

Owning: Solar energy system belongs to building owner, with the flexibility and freedom to use or sell the electricity generated.

What is a power purchase agreement (PPA)?

A PPA is a contract between an installer (i.e. the solar partner) and the end user (you). With a PPA, the installer bears the installation costs while the end user purchases electricity at an agreed-upon rate, thus saving on electricity.

Can I sell the green electricity generated from my solar power?

If you own the solar system, you will be generating renewable energy. Whilst you may not be able to sell the electricity directly, you can sell the environmental attributes or Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs). RECs are certificates that represent the generation of in units of one megawatt hour (MWh) of renewable energy. This certificate can be monetised and sold. Who owns the certificate owns the associated decarbonisation. As such building owners with solar on their roof can further monetise their renewable energy through the generation and sale of their environmental attributes. For companies entering into PPA’s, it is important that if you need the decarbonisation from the renewable energy, that you include this in the contract and this will be priced into the energy tariff.

Are there partners that can facilitate the generation, aggregation, sales and purchase of RECs?

OCBC has partnered GoNetZero, a wholly owned company of Sembcorp who have a digital platform that facilitates the solar developers, building owners and corporates in managing the generation, aggregation, sale, purchase and retirement of REC’s. However, there are other companies who offer REC services.
