An overview of the education system

The Singaporean education journey takes place over three key stages, leading up to university.

Primary Education

Compulsory for all students aged between 7 and 12, primary school education in Singapore comprises of 6 years in total.

International Student Admissions

  • Non-Singapore citizen / non-permanent resident children aged 6 or 6+ as of 1 January in the year of admission will need to participate in the Phase 3 Primary One Registration Exercise.
  • Students aged 7 and above as of 1 January in the year of school admission who are seeking admission to our mainstream schools, are required to sit for the Admissions Exercise for International Students (AEIS) or the Supplementary Admissions Exercise for International Students (S-AEIS):
    • International students seeking admission to Primary 2 – 5 in the following academic year are to take the AEIS.
    • New students are generally not admitted at Primary 6.

Secondary Education

Secondary school education comprises of 4 to 5 years, and is meant for students aged between 13 and 17.

International Student Admissions

  • Students aged 12 and above as of 1 January in the year of school admission who are seeking admission to our mainstream schools are required to sit for the Admissions Exercise for International Students (AEIS) or the Supplementary Admissions Exercise for International Students (S-AEIS):
    • International students seeking admission to Secondary 1 – 3 in the following academic year are to take the AEIS.
    • International students seeking admission to Secondary 1 – 2 in the same academic year are to take the S-AEIS.
    • New students are generally not admitted at Secondary 4 and 5.

Pre-University Education

Pre-university education takes place over 2 to 3 years, with students typically aged between 17 and 20.

International Student Admissions

  • International students seeking admissions are to apply to the respective schools directly. Admission is subject to the international student meeting the respective school’s admission criteria and vacancies available.

University Education

Upon graduation from pre-university education, students are qualified to apply for an undergraduate programme at university, which usually takes 2 to 5 years. Students at this stage are typically aged between 19 and 26.

International Student Admissions

  • International students seeking admissions are to apply to the respective Universities.
  • There are different admission criteria for each university and the respective course application, but typically, students seeking admission must have completed at least 12 years of general education or will be taking the High School national examinations in the year of application in order to be considered for admission.
