Mighty Savers™ Short Story by
Leong Jia Yu

It was Christmas Eve. People were milling around the streets, buying presents or window-shopping. Dusk was settling around the village. Among the throng of villagers were the Mighty Savers Family, Sam the father, Sandra the mother, Simon their son, Sarah and Sally their daughters. The Mighty Savers Family was buying presents.

‘’Remember, Simon and Sally, it is important to save. Never spend too much money if you can help it,’’ Sam said. ‘’We will!’’ Simon and Sally chorused. The Mighty Savers Family went into a toy shop. ‘’Look at that bear!’’ Sally said, looking at a large bear in a corner. ‘’Look at the bear beside it,’’ Sandra said, pointing to a smaller bear. ‘’It’s cheaper. It’s best to buy that.’’ Sally obeyed. ‘’Now I can save some of my pocket money,’’ she thought. Then Simon saw a toy plane. Sam said, ‘’There’s going to be a discount tomorrow. Buy that tomorrow.’’ ‘’Okay,’’ Simon said. ‘’It is fun learning to save,’’ Simon thought. Suddenly Sally’s attention was caught by a beautiful doll. ‘’I’ll buy her too!’’ Sally said. ‘’Think, Sally,’’ Sam said. ‘’Is that a need or a want You have a bear already.’’ Sally said,’’ It’s a want. ''Yes, and it’s a waste of money to spend things on what you want and not what you need,’’ Sam explained. ‘’So I won’t buy it,’’ Sally said. ‘’You are a good girl!’’ Sam smiled. Sally counted the money on her fingers. ‘’I just saved three dollars of my pocket money!’’ she said excitedly. ‘’See how saving benefits you’’ Sam said. ‘’Yes, we do,’’ Sally and Simon said.

‘’Can we take a taxi home’’ Sally asked. ‘’The buses will be crowded today because it’s Christmas Eve and I’m too tired to stand.’’ ‘’Sally, the bus comes with handrails,’’ Sandra said. “Beside, a taxi ride is expensive. If you’re too tired to stand, you can still rest when you get home. Tired legs are not as important as an empty wallet.” Sally nodded. ‘’I can see that saving is very important.’’
