Mighty Savers™ Short Story by
Jonathan Liew Chong Kai

Christmas was around the corner. It was going to be Baby Sarah’s first Christmas this year. The Mighty Savers Family was really excited as they wanted to have a special Christmas party for their youngest addition.

At the same time, Sandra and Sam also knew that in these times of economic uncertainties, they had to tighten their belts. As both parents were busy working, Simon and Sally were tasked to organize the family party with a budget of $60. Sally was delighted as she loves to balance the numbers and organize parties!

As the two siblings began to plan the decorations and presents, a brilliant idea struck Simon. ''I know! We can Reduce, Reuse and Recycle!'' he exclaimed. Without hesitation, he pulled out the Christmas tree that they used last year. ''We can also make the decorations out of recycled items!'' said Sally excitedly. Springing to her feet, she quickly collected some unused sparkling buttons, hairclips and ribbons and painstakingly placed them on the tree. Baby Sarah also contributed her mini toys on the tree. Finally, Simon whipped out his favourite possession – his flashing star clapper, which he got from NDP 07. All three siblings gasped with glee as Simon tied the star at the top of the tree.

''Now what presents shall we buy for Mummy and Daddy'' asked Simon. Just then, Baby Sarah took out her crayons and started to scribble on a piece of paper. ''That’s it!'' Sally shouted. ''Mommy loves art. Let’s all paint her a picture!'' With that, all three rolled up their sleeves and painted the most wonderful picture for their parents.

When their parents got home, the kids showed them the tree. ''It’s beautiful!'' echoed them both. ''Moreover, since all of you used your creativity and saved the $60, you can each have $20 deposited into your Mighty Savers Account!'' Mommy said.

With that, they headed towards OCBC and happily banked in their savings. Thereafter, the family went to Jurong East library and had a scrumptious dinner at Café Galilee. Daddy then read some books to the kids.
