Global Impact

In April 2008, OCBC Bank became a signatory to the United Nations (UN)-led Global Compact, a network of companies, governments, non-governmental and labour organisations who have agreed to work with the UN to support ten principles in the areas of human rights, labour, the environment and anti-corruption.

  What is the Global Compact?

The UN Global Compact is a framework for businesses that are committed to values beyond mere profit. The Global Compact sets forth principles that it asks companies to embrace, support and enact within their sphere of influence. It was initiated by former UN General Secretary Kofi Annan and was emphatically reaffirmed by present UN General Secretary Ban Ki-moon.

The Global Compact's ten principles in the areas of human rights, labour, the environment and anti-corruption are derived from:

  • The Universal Declaration of Human Rights
  • The International Labour Organisation's Declaration on Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work
  • The Rio Declaration on Environment and Development
  • The United Nations Convention Against Corruption

As the world's largest global corporate citizenship initiative, the Global Compact is first and foremost concerned with exhibiting and building the social legitimacy of business and markets.

  The Ten Principles of the Global Compact

The spirit of the Global Compact is already embedded in OCBC’s Purpose and Values, policies, procedures and practices. Companies that join the Global Compact commit to support the following objectives and values in their corporate policies:

Human Rights
1. Businesses should support and respect the protection of internationally proclaimed human rights within their sphere of influence; and
2. make sure that they are not complicit in human rights abuses.

Labour Standards
3. Businesses should uphold the freedom of association and the effective recognition of the right to collective bargaining;
4. the elimination of all forms of forced and compulsory labour;
5. the effective abolition of child labour; and
6. eliminate discrimination in respect of employment and occupation.

Environment
7. Businesses should support a precautionary approach to environmental challenges;
8. undertake initiatives to promote greater environmental responsibility; and
9. encourage the development and diffusion of environmentally friendly technologies.

Anti-Corruption
10. Businesses should work against all forms of corruption, including extortion and bribery.
